Who Is Your Audience?
You need to understand your site’s visitors. When they initially came to your site, they were looking for an answer. you need to be able to continue giving them the answers they are seeking. If you do this, you will gain a loyal visitor base for your website.
Where do your visitors come from? How old are they? What is their economic background? These are all questions you must ask yourself. If you have a basic site on Astronomy, the average person may look around because they have an interest in this subject. But, if a person who is well educated in Astronomy visits, they may leave immediately. If you have information that deeply looks at a book or manuscript to find the philosophy behind it, a Literature major may find it interesting, but someone who is looking for a review on that material, will leave.
Take your audience’s emotional state into consideration when building your site. If a very irritated visitor searches for a solution and comes across your site, you will want to make sure you offer the solution right up front and sell or promote your product to him second. In this way, the visitor will put his trust in you for offering the solution to his problems and is more likely to buy your product when you offer it to him after that.
When you design the layout for your site, you have to take into account the characteristics of your audience. Are they old or young people? Are they looking for trends or are they just looking for information served without any icing on the cake? For example, introducing a new, exciting game with a simple, straightforward black text against white background page will definitely turn prospects away. Make sure your design suits your site’s general theme.
Try to incorporate slang and terms that are specific to your audience. This may help your visitor develop a common ground with you. It will also strengthen the perception that you are an expert on that subject. This will help to develop a relationship with your visitor. It will also make it more likely that they may purchase a product that you may feature on your site.
I guess the main idea you will want to establish is that you are a friend and colleague.

You make some excellent points. I truly believe that the reader is there looking for something that will entertain as well as educate them. Your selling should be a second point to that fact. If you are providing great content they will return and learn to trust you. Once you have that you can sell them on lots of things.
